Overview

The legal externship is an unpaid, 150-hour field placement program in partnership with Saint Louis University School of Law wherein the Extern gains hands-on experience in the operations of the In-House legal function in exchange for course credit. The Extern will gather experience in preparing and editing legal documents, filings and records; advising various business units on legal issues as arise in the day-to-day corporate world; and preparing for administrative hearings and legal proceedings to which the company is a party.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze legal issues and draft advice memoranda for business on various laws and issues; perform legal research as needed. Provide guidance to various business units regarding legal issues pursuant to direction of attorneys.
  • Review and analyze job descriptions for FLSA compliance.
  • Assist with intellectual property matters, including filings and brand protection; track and report on all ongoing IP litigation.
  • Review contracts and all 3rd party NDA's.
  • Assist with updating template agreements.
  • Assist with administrative hearings and agency proceedings, including witness prep, hearing and exhibit prep, drafting position statements and researching relevant legal issues .
  • Assist attorneys with developing and maintaining internal control procedures as needed to track compliance with corporate policies and programs.
  • Draft and review correspondence, memoranda, presentations, reports, and other materials as requested.
  • Address phone calls, emails and other communications in a prompt and professional manner.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by attorneys.
  • Regular and reliable attendance in the office is required.
  • This position must primarily be performed in the office but flex work from home is available on a limited basis.

Qualifications

  • Current admission to Saint Louis University Law Program in good standing required.
  • Interest in working in a corporate legal department.
  • Strong interest in commercial and employment law.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Strong follow through and follow-up
  • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated focus, commitment, and ability to deliver great customer service.
  • Proficiency in articulating, communicating professionally and appropriately with confidence at all levels and across functional lines.
